Cafe Edinburgh

Old Town · Established 2014

Cafe Edinburgh

Slow mornings and dark roasts in the shadow of Holyrood.

A small cafe on Holyrood Road, a minute from the Parliament and at the foot of Arthur’s Seat. Dark roasts, stone-baked pastries and a seat by the window.

Who we are

A printworks, a roaster and a long counter

We opened in 2014 in a former printworks on the Canongate, keeping the stone walls and the cold store door. The roaster came second, the gluten-free kitchen third.

Everything is made here, most of it before the first bus goes past. You are welcome to stay as long as you like.

The flat white is the best I have had in Edinburgh, and they remember your order after two visits. I come in before work most mornings now.

Walked in off Holyrood Road on a wet Tuesday and stayed two hours. Dark, warm, brilliant records on, and the Cullen skink was exactly right.

Coeliac here. A separate gluten-free menu with its own board and utensils, and staff who actually know what is in everything. Rare and very welcome.

Took my parents for the whisky flight. Three proper drams, honest notes, no fuss. They have asked to come back every visit since.

Cosy without being twee. I wrote most of my dissertation in the window seat and nobody hurried me along.
